Small outdoor spaces present unique challenges, but with a little creativity and expertise, these areas can be transformed into stunning and functional landscapes. At GO Designs, we specialize in maximizing the potential of compact and awkwardly shaped areas, turning them into inviting retreats that feel much larger than their actual dimensions. Here are some innovative strategies we use to enhance small landscapes, along with real-world examples from our recent projects in El Paso.
One of the most effective ways to maximize space in a small landscape is through vertical gardening. This technique allows you to exploit the vertical plane, adding lushness and life to what might otherwise be overlooked spaces. Climbing plants, wall-mounted planters, and trellises can turn a bare wall or fence into a vibrant living garden. For instance, in a recent project in the Sunset Heights area, we installed custom trellises with climbing roses and jasmine to add both privacy and a pop of color to a small courtyard. The result is a vertical garden that draws the eye upward, making the space feel larger and more enclosed.
In small landscapes, efficiency is key. Every element must serve a purpose, and if it can serve two or more, even better. Fold-away furniture, built-in planters that double as seating, and retractable awnings can transform a tiny terrace into a versatile outdoor living area. One standout project involved designing a custom bench that wraps around the perimeter of a small patio, offering ample seating for gatherings while integrating storage underneath for gardening tools and outdoor cushions. This approach not only saves space but also maintains a clutter-free zone that is essential in smaller landscapes.
Using light and mirrors strategically can make small outdoor spaces appear larger and more inviting. Mirrors reflect the garden and create a sense of depth, while proper lighting can enhance key features and cast captivating shadows that give the illusion of a larger area. In a recent transformation in Kern Place, we installed water-resistant mirrors along the side of a narrow passageway, reflecting the adjacent greenery and visually doubling the garden's size. Additionally, we used LED path lighting to guide the eye through the space, making it appear longer and more intriguing.

One particularly effective transformation involved a small, underutilized backyard in the Manhattan Heights neighborhood. Initially, the space was nothing more than a patch of grass with a few shrubs.
